I attended the art residency project organized by DawanArt with visual artist Miao Jing from May 15th to July 15th in Paris. We held the exhibition named "Ginseng" on July 5th inside the apartment/studio we were staying and had a roundtable discussion about our creative process the day after with local artists, professors and curators. During this time, we also launched our new audiovisual project called [初] ZPTPJ, more on in another post.
People asked why our exhibition was named "Ginseng". Ginseng is oftenly called the "king of Chinese medicine", which has impressive effect on improving one's energy. We think artists are like Ginseng, absorbing surrounding information, and then releasing information as art back to the audience, that enhances and nourishes people's spiritual lives.
The center piece of our exhibition is an audiovisual work called "Cabinet of Medicine", with a ginseng in the middle, surrounded by eleven other medicines inside a cabinet. The medicines rotate while changing colors and textures according to the change of seasons, accompanied by music that was inspired by the concept of solar term. Adjacent to it is another work called "Fragments of the Paradise", with a gold stone that represent earth and a meteorite represents extraterrestrial worlds. Both works together symbolize the cycles of life. Other works include animation short [忘] Amnesia, a vinyl record with my new music and 3 prints which are my very first 3D artwork (I spent a lot of learning the new skill in Paris).
Dawan Art is doing a crucial work introducing modern Chinese artists to the west and establishing valuable conversations. I'm very grateful for this opportunity, especially for the feedback we received during exhibition and discussion. Paris is truly a magnificent place for artist to get inspired. Looking forward to coming back in the future.
